Failed a BTEC external exam? How resits, points, and caps work
If you fail an externally examined BTEC unit (such as Unit 3 Personal and Business Finance), Pearson permits you one retake opportunity during the next available examination series. Crucially, your exam resit is not capped at a Pass, and Pearson automatically counts your best score toward your final qualification grade.

How exam scaled scores impact your final grade
External examinations in qualifications like the BTEC Level 3 National or International Diploma use Uniform Mark Scales (UMS) or points scaling. Your raw exam marks are converted into points based on published grade boundaries (Near Pass, Pass, Merit, Distinction).
Because external units carry substantial guided learning hours (GLH)—often 90 to 120 hours—raising an exam score from a Near Pass to a Merit can elevate your overall qualification from a Merit-Merit (MM) to a Distinction-Distinction (DD).
What happens if you fail the exam resit?
Under current specifications, many BTEC courses feature a "compensation rule" where a Near Pass (N) grade in an external exam may still allow you to achieve the overall qualification, provided your coursework units generate sufficient aggregate points.
However, receiving an Unclassified (U) in a mandatory external unit will prevent qualification certification entirely. Speak to your exams officer immediately to register for the January or Summer retake series.
