P1A Pass criterion, numbered to identify it.
M1A Merit criterion, numbered to identify it.
D1A Distinction criterion, numbered to identify it.

In Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Business, the letter shows the grade band: P means Pass, M means Merit and D means Distinction. The number helps identify a particular criterion. A code may also include a learning aim, such as A.P1. The code alone does not say what work is required: read the full wording beside it.

How do the grade bands fit together?

Pearson's specification says the criteria are linked. To receive a unit Merit, the learner must meet all the required Merit criteria and the linked Pass requirements. A Distinction also includes the Merit and Pass requirements. Completing the assignment by itself is not enough to receive a Pass.

A criterion asking a learner to describe asks for more than naming something. A higher criterion may ask the learner to explain or assess it. Read the actual criterion and the guidance for that unit; do not judge work from the letter or action word alone.

Does P1 mean the same thing in every unit?

No. The number distinguishes criteria within a unit or learning aim. Unit 1 P1 and Unit 16 P1 can ask for different evidence. Match the code to the correct unit and assignment every time.

Read how to check a P1 criterion, how a unit grade is decided, or look up a unit in the Level 2 Business unit reference pages.

For the official explanation, use Pearson's Level 2 Business specification.

Check the criteria before the IV does.

checkb.tech reads learner evidence against the official Pearson criteria and reports every criterion as met, partly met or not met — with the evidence cited. It never awards a grade; the teacher stays the assessor.
