Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

4 criteria
3A.P1Explain the action and effects of forces on three different construction materials applying scientific and mathematical principles.
3A.P2Explain the effects of temperature change on three different materials used in construction, applying scientific principles.
3B.P3Apply algebraic and graphical methods to solve two different practical construction problems.
3B.P4Apply mensuration and trigonometry to solve two different practical construction problems.

Merit

3 criteria
3A.M1Discuss how two different construction materials behave under load in practical construction contexts.
3A.M2Discuss how two different construction materials behave under load in practical construction contexts.
3B.M3Solve a practical construction problem using trigonometric, mensuration and algebraic methods.

Distinction

2 criteria
3A.D1Evaluate two different construction materials in terms of their behaviour under load and their response to changes in temperature in practical construction contexts.
3B.D2Justify the application of algebraic and graphical methods, mensuration and trigonometry to solve a practical construction problem.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainApplyDiscussSolveEvaluateJustify
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Understand the effects of forces and temperature changes on materials used in construction
  • B. Use mathematical techniques to solve construction problems

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
