Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

7 criteria
A.P1Research an engineering problem based on a given theme and scope out at least three alternative solutions.
A.P2Outline at least three alternative solutions to an engineering problem and select a preferred solution.
B.P3Implement project-management processes, including planning, monitoring and risk and issue management.
B.P4Produce the technical specification for a solution to an engineering problem.
B.P5Produce design documentation to detail the solution, including a test plan and taking account of sustainability.
C.P6Produce a solution safely using project-management processes while recording progress.
C.P7Perform relevant behaviours effectively while developing a solution safely.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Assess consistently at least three solutions to an engineering problem on a given theme and recommend a preferred solution.
B.M2Implement project-management processes, including detailed planning and monitoring and proactive risk and issue management.
B.M3Design a coherent solution, considering alternative approaches.
C.M4Perform effective project-management processes while justifying refinements and demonstrating effective behaviours consistently to develop a solution that is fit for audience and purpose.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, at least three realistic solutions to an engineering problem on a given theme and justify a preferred solution.
B.D2Optimise the project-management processes and design solution while allowing for reasonable contingency and considering constraints.
C.D3Optimise the project-management processes to develop a solution that is fit for audience and purpose while anticipating and resolving risks and issues, demonstrating behaviours to a professional standard.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ResearchOutlineImplementProducePerformAssessDesignEvaluateOptimise
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
