Reading a BTEC criteria grid: the 5-minute skill

The criteria grid is the single most useful page in any BTEC document — and the most skipped. Five minutes of grid literacy changes how you mark, how you write briefs, and how fast you can answer any "what does this criterion want?" question. Here's the skill.

Where grids live

Three places, all showing the same law: the specification's unit section (the authoritative copy), the final page of every assignment brief (the convenient copy — same wording, cleaner layout), and the criteria library on this site — every unit, verbatim, searchable.

Decoding a criterion code

Take A.P1 and AB.D1:

  • Letter(s) before the dot = learning aim(s). A.P1 sits in learning aim A. AB.D1 spans aims A and B — Distinction criteria often draw on more than one aim, which is why they sit at the end of a unit and ask for conclusions across its content.
  • Letter after the dot = grade band. P = Pass, M = Merit, D = Distinction.
  • Number = sequence within that band. P1, P2, P3… in assessment order. There's no "P1 is easier than P2" meaning — it's just order.

Reading the grid as a marking scheme

A typical unit grid — Business Finance (Level 3) for example:

Read down each learning aim and you can see the ladder: same topic, deepening verbs — explain → analyse → evaluate. That's not coincidence, it's design: the P→M→D progression within an aim is a command-verb progression. When a learner asks "what's the difference between P1 and M1?", the honest answer is in the grid: one word, the verb.

What the grid gives you, by role

  • Assessor: your marking scheme is the grid plus the band rule. Nothing else is assessed.
  • IV: sample against grid lines, not scripts — "show me the evidence for B.P4" is a grid-driven question.
  • Brief author: every grid criterion needs a task that generates evidence for it, and no task may ask for what the grid doesn't.
  • Learner: the grid is the revision syllabus — verbs included — and the answer to "how much detail?" every time.

Common misreadings

  1. Treating the grid as a checklist of pages. The verbs set the bar; the grid's rows aren't page quotas.
  2. Mixing up codes across units. Every unit has an A.P1 — always grid plus unit, never code alone. (Across brief versions the grid is identical — see the PSA guide.)
  3. Reading D criteria as "harder P criteria". They're different in kind — judgement, not volume: see the Distinction guide.

Do all units have the same grid shape?

Same anatomy, different counts: units have varying numbers of Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria per aim. The code system never changes.
