A working evidence checklist for BTEC assessment
Most disputed BTEC decisions are not arguments about judgement — they are arguments about whether evidence was actually there. A checklist keeps that argument short. This is the one we work from, built around what an internal verifier samples.
The six-point evidence checklist
- Does the evidence speak to a specific criterion? Not "the assignment in general" — a named criterion code. If you cannot say which criterion this paragraph satisfies, an IV cannot either.
- Is it anchored to the brief's scenario? Evidence about "businesses in general" satisfies description criteria at best. Most Merit and all Distinction criteria require the named business, its figures, its context.
- Does the depth match the command verb? Explain needs a "because". Analyse needs parts connected. Evaluate needs a judgement. Check the verb ladder against the criterion's wording.
- Does it use the brief's data? Where the assignment brief supplies tables and figures, that data is assessment material. Evidence that ignores it is the most common "partly met" in Business units.
- Is it the learner's own work, and can you show that? Drafts, version history, in-class observation notes — something that supports your authentication decision. See authenticating group work.
- Is the trail written down? Decision + criterion + evidence location, recorded at the time of marking. Memory is not a verification record.
Evidence types and where they shine
| Evidence type | Best for | Weakness to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Written reports / documents | Most Business criteria | Generic prose that could belong to any submission |
| Presentations & slides | Pitching, communication criteria | Bullet points that assert instead of explain |
| Spreadsheets & calculations | Finance criteria (e.g. Unit 3) | Numbers with no interpretation — the "so what" is the criterion |
| Observation records / witness statements | Practical and interpersonal criteria | Vague statements ("participated well") that assess nothing |
| Recorded video / audio | Role plays, interviews, presentations | Wandering content that never addresses the criterion |
The pre-IV pass
Run the checklist across the batch before internal verification, not during it. The practical way: for each script, list every criterion in the assignment, and beside it the location of the evidence that satisfies it. Where the location is blank or uncertain, that is your review list. Doing this by hand for a class set takes an evening; it is the exact work checkb.tech automates — per-criterion verdicts with the evidence cited, upload by script or in bulk.
FAQ
How much evidence is enough?
Enough to satisfy the criterion's verb for the brief's scenario — no page count exists in the rules. Two sharp paragraphs beat six vague pages.
Can one piece of evidence cover multiple criteria?
Yes — strong evidence often does. Just record each criterion separately in your assessment records, each with its own location reference.
What about resubmitted evidence?
It is assessed exactly like first-attempt evidence, and the resubmission rules still govern whether it can be accepted.
