Question30-second answer
Is BTEC offered in the UAE?Yes. Some schools and training centres run Pearson BTEC International programmes.
How is it assessed?Mostly by internal assignments marked by your teacher and quality-checked by the centre, rather than one final exam.
Who sets the grades?Pass, Merit and Distinction are decided by the centre's assessors against Pearson's published criteria.
What should I confirm first? That the school is an approved Pearson centre for the exact qualification and level you want.

What BTEC International means in the UAE

Pearson BTEC International qualifications are vocational courses taught in centres outside the UK. In the UAE, a school or training centre must be approved by Pearson to deliver a specific qualification before it can register learners and issue results. Being a good school does not by itself mean it is approved for BTEC.

How students are assessed

Most units are assessed through assignments. A teacher sets or adapts a brief, the student submits evidence, and the assessor judges it against the Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria for that unit. A second member of staff, the internal verifier, samples the marking so grades stay consistent. Some units use Pearson-set assignments with fixed briefs. See our guides to Pearson set assignments and how BTECs are graded.

Questions to ask a UAE school before choosing BTEC

  • Are you an approved Pearson centre for this exact qualification and size?
  • Which units will we study, and when are the assignment deadlines?
  • What is the resubmission policy? Pearson allows one authorised resubmission per assignment. Read our resubmission rules guide.
  • Which universities have previous BTEC students gone on to?

Check the regulator's rules too

School regulation differs by emirate, for example Dubai's KHDA, Abu Dhabi's ADEK and the Ministry of Education for other emirates. Rules about which post-16 qualifications a private school may offer change, so confirm directly with the school and the relevant authority rather than relying on a third-party list.

How teachers keep BTEC marking consistent

Teachers in international centres often mark alone or in small teams. CheckB's unit criteria pages show the exact criteria for each unit, and our advisory checker highlights evidence that is met, partly met or not met. It never awards a grade; the assessor always decides.

CheckB is an advisory tool. Always refer to the official Pearson specification for authoritative guidance.

Check the criteria before the IV does.

checkb.tech reads learner evidence against the official Pearson criteria and reports every criterion as met, partly met or not met — with the evidence cited. It never awards a grade; the teacher stays the assessor.
