Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

5 criteria
A.P1Explain how internal and external factors have influenced the design of an engineered product
B.P2Produce a PDS to meet some of the requirements of a customer brief.
B.P3Produce a detailed PDS to meet most of the requirements of a customer brief
C.P4Present suitable and detailed initial design proposals that meet most the requirements of a customer brief and a PDS
C.P5Present a suitable and detailed chosen solution that meets most of the requirements of a customer brief and a PDS

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Evaluate why specific internal and external factors have had the greatest influence on the design of an engineered product
B.M2Sources of information
C.M3Refine initial design proposals and a chosen solution to meet all of the requirements of a customer brief and an effective PDS
C.M4Sources of information

Distinction

2 criteria
A.D1Sources of information
BC.D2Task 2

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainProducePresentEvaluateSourcesRefineTask
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Investigate factors that influence the design of engineered products
  • B. Develop product design specifications (PDS) for engineered products from customer briefs
  • C. Develop design proposals and solutions for engineered products meeting customer briefs and PDS requirements

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
