Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Describe the importance and uses of water.
A.P2Explain the steps in the hydrological cycle.
B.P3Explain the presence and impact of substances and microorganisms in water sources.
B.P4Compare differences in the content of marine and fresh water with drinking water.
C.P5Explain biological, chemical and physical indicators and tests for water quality.
C.P6Investigate the basic water quality of an aquatic habitat over a period of time.
C.P7Produce a report on the water quality of a given aquatic habitat.
D.P8Explain different methods of water and sewage treatment.

Merit

6 criteria
A.M1Explain the physical and chemical properties of water.
A.M2Assess the impact of different climates and human activity on the hydrological cycle.
B.M3Discuss changes in water quality of a selected river as it travels from source to mouth.
B.M4Discuss acidification and eutrophication in aquatic habitats.
C.M5Analyse and present conclusions, with recommendations, for the investigation of an aquatic habitat.
D.M6Discuss methods to conserve and control consumption of water.

Distinction

4 criteria
A.D1Evaluate the concept and use of the water footprint for a range of products, individuals and countries.
B.D2Evaluate how biological, chemical and physical factors affect the life cycle of two named species of aquatic animal or plant life.
C.D3Evaluate sampling techniques and tests used in determining water quality.
D.D4Evaluate the use of water treatment and conservation methods to meet different purposes.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeExplainCompareInvestigateProduceAssessDiscussAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
