Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Investigate endothermic and exothermic reactions.
B.P2Investigate factors that affect rate of reaction
B.P3Investigate factors that affect systems in dynamic equilibrium
C.P5Determine structures and names of organic compounds
C.P6Describe the difference in bonding between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons
D.P7Review the chemistry of alkane and alkenes, including reactions of commercial importance
D.P8Explain the reactions of halogenoalkanes and alcohols
D.P9Explain and use chromatography to separate mixtures

Merit

7 criteria
A.M1Calculate enthalpy changes for a range of reactions using Hess energy cycles, average bond energies and standard enthalpy changes of combustion.
B.M2Analyse gradients from tangents of graphs to accurately determine rate of reaction.
B.M3Carry out calculations involving Kc and interpret changes in values with temperature
C.M4Explain the important of functional groups, homologous series and isomerism
D.M5Construct mechanisms for addition, substitution and elimination reactions
D.M6Demonstrate skillful preparation and testing of an organic compound
D.M7Analyse chromatograms and factors that affect the quality of the separation of the mixture

Distinction

4 criteria
A.D1Discuss assumptions and sources of error in measurement and calculation of enthalpy changes.
B.D2Justify operational conditions for industrial equilibrium processes to obtain the optimum rate and yield of product.
C.D3Assess the effect of structure on the physical properties of organic compounds
D.D4Assess different ways to make an organic compound and the factors affecting yield and purity

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

InvestigateDetermineDescribeReviewExplainCalculateAnalyseCarryConstructDemonstrateDiscussJustifyAssess
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
