Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Explain the methods for calculating heat transfer in conduction, convection and radiation through materials and structures.
A.P2Explain the principles of fuel combustion and their impact on the design and performance of installations and equipment.
B.P3Explain the principles of generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy.
C.P4Produce a solution to a thermodynamic problem where there are multiple pressures, with reference to enthalpy.
C.P5Produce a solution to a thermodynamic problem involving identification, interpretation and plotting of P-H diagrams and processes.
C.P6Interpret a given psychrometric chart involving properties of air and water vapour mixtures and air conditioning systems in order to determine relative humidity and temperature.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Assess the implications of heat transfer and combustion in the design and performance of installations and equipment, taking into account the principles of conservation of energy and combustion of fuel.
B.M2Assess the use of different voltages during generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy.
C.M3Produce clear and accurate solutions to thermodynamic problems with reference to enthalpy and P-H diagrams and processes.
C.M4Produce clear and accurate solutions to psychrometric problems involving properties of air and water vapour mixtures and air conditioning systems in order to determine relative humidity and temperature.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate the significance of heat transfer and combustion in the design and performance of installations and equipment, taking into account the principles of conservation of energy, and the combustion and characteristics of fuels.
B.D2Justify, for a given scenario, the use of transformers in the transmission and distribution of electrical power, with reference to generation and end use.
C.D3Evaluate produced solutions to thermodynamic and psychrometric problems to heating, air conditioning and refrigeration.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainProduceInterpretAssessEvaluateJustify
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Understand the principles of energy, heat transfer and combustion applicable to building services systems
  • B. Explore the characteristics of electrical supply systems applicable to building services systems
  • C. Examine the thermodynamic properties for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
