Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Demonstrate the use of the main functions of a scientific calculator to perform calculations, applying manual checks to results.
A.P2Demonstrate the use of standard mathematical outcome techniques to simplify expressions and solve problems using linear formulae
A.P3Demonstrate the use of graphical methods to solve linear and quadratic equations
B.P4Demonstrate the use of mathematical techniques to solve construction problems associated with simple perimeters, areas and volume.
C.P5Demonstrate the use of trigonometric techniques to solve simple 2D construction problems.
C.P6Demonstrate the use of geometric techniques to solve simple construction problems
D.P7Demonstrate the use of statistical techniques to solve practical construction problems.
D.P8Demonstrate the use of graphical techniques to solve practical construction problems

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Demonstrate the use of algebraic methods to solve linear, quadratic and simultaneous linear and quadratic equations.
B.M22 Demonstrate the use of appropriate algebraic methods to find lengths, angles, areas and volumes for one 2D complex construction industry-related problem.
C.M3Demonstrate the use of appropriate trigonometric techniques to solve one complex 3D construction industry-related problem.
D.M4Demonstrate the use of standard deviation techniques to compare the quality of manufactured products used in the construction industry.

Distinction

2 criteria
AB.D1Independently carry out checks on calculations using relevant alternative mathematical methods, making appropriate judgements on the outcome.
CD.D2Apply the use of binomial theory to small errors problem and demonstrate an understanding of the limitations of certain solution in terms of accuracy, approximations and rounding errors.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DemonstrateIndependentlyApply
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
