Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

12 criteria
A.P1Explain how genetics affects the process of human reproduction from conception to birth.
A.P2Describe the structures of organic and inorganic biological molecules.
A.P3Describe the role of three organic and two inorganic molecules in metabolism.
B.P2Explain how different genetic and environmental factors can affect pre- and post-natal development.
B.P3Explain how factors that affect healthy pre-natal development leading to developmental delay or impairment of normal body functioning influence postnatal development and care needs through the life course.
B.P4Describe how the structure of biomolecules affects their roles in metabolic processes.
B.P5Explain how different factors affect enzyme activity.
C.P4Explain how reproductive and gene technologies can contribute to promoting life chances.
C.P5Explain the effects that reproductive and gene technologies can have on a selected individual and society.
C.P6Describe how biochemical investigations into metabolic disorders are carried out.
C.P7Explain the causes and treatments of three metabolic disorders.
D.P6Explain how reproductive and gene technologies can cause ethical challenges associated with a specific genetic disorder for a selected individual and society.

Merit

6 criteria
A.M1Assess how the structure of three organic and two inorganic molecules affects their function and role in metabolism.
B.M2Assess how genetic and environmental factors resulting in developmental delay or impairment of normal body functioning
B.M3Assess the impact of factors affecting enzyme activity on metabolic rates.
C.M3Analyse the impact of reproductive and gene technologies for a selected individual and society in relation to promoting life chances.
C.M4Assess the impact of research into biochemical processes on the treatment of metabolic disorders.
D.M4Analyse how a specific genetic disorder can affect the use of reproductive and gene technologies and cause ethical challenges for a selected individual and society.

Distinction

6 criteria
A.D1Analyse the structure, function and role of inorganic and organic molecules, and their role in metabolism.
AB.D1Evaluate the role of genetics, the impact of factors affecting healthy pre-natal development, and difficulties related to reproduction affect
B.D2Analyse how the structure, functions and action of biomolecules affect metabolic processes, and how different factors that affect enzyme activity impact on metabolic rates.
C.D3Evaluate how research into biochemical processes and their role in metabolism affects the treatment of metabolic disorders.
CD.D2Evaluate the role of reproductive and gene technologies in promoting life chances and causing ethical challenges for a selected individual
D.D3Evaluate the importance of the role of genetics in pre- and post-natal development and the contribution of reproductive and gene technologies in promoting individuals and society’s life chances, referring to ethical challenges.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainDescribeAssessAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Understand genetics and its role in human inheritance from conception to birth.
  • B. Examine the factors affecting pre- and post-natal development.
  • C. Investigate how advances in science can contribute to understanding reproductive and gene technologies.
  • D. Examine how legislation and ethical challenges influence the use of reproductive and gene technologies.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
