Unit 17: Unit 17 — assessment criteria

BTEC International Level 3 Unit 17 (Unit 17) — 60 Guided Learning Hours.

Internal / Optional60 GLH13 criteria

Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

7 criteria
A.P1Explain the identifying characteristics of annual, biennial and perennial crops and their products.
A.P2Explain the basic parameters that determine where crops are grown.
B.P3Explain the production cycles required to successfully grow two contrasting crops.
B.P4Recognise general signs of health and deficiency symptoms in two contrasting crops.
B.P5Suggest appropriate remedial action to maintain crop health.
C.P6Safely carry out a given crop harvesting task to meet objectives
C.P7Safely carry out a given monitoring task to meet objectives within given storage facilities

Merit

3 criteria
A.M1Assess the parameters that influence the production, quality and yield of crops.
B.M2Recommend actions to maintain healthy crops throughout the production cycles required to grow two contrasting crops.
C.M3Relate the results of monitoring to crop harvest conditions, grading, sorting and/or cleaning requirements within given storage facilities

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate reasons for the production of specified crops in particular locations, and the effect on quality and yield.
B.D2Justify appropriate remedial actions taken to maintain the health of crops in given situations.
C.D3Carry out a monitoring task with a high degree of accuracy, evaluating the impact of growing, harvesting and storage of crops on the quality of the final product.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainRecogniseSuggestSafelyAssessRecommendRelateEvaluateJustifyCarry
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
