Quick answerWhat it means
Who assesses it?The centre assesses the learner’s work against the unit criteria.
Pearson Set AssignmentPearson sets the task; the centre assesses the work.
Other assignmentsThe centre sets and assesses the task, following Pearson’s unit requirements.

In Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Business, the centre assesses assignments by comparing the learner’s evidence with the assessment criteria for the unit. The teacher uses the full criterion and Pearson’s guidance to make the decision.

This applies to both types of assignment in the qualification: a Pearson Set Assignment and an assignment set by the teacher or centre. The centre assesses both.

A practical marking check

  1. Open the correct unit in the Pearson specification.
  2. Read the full assessment criterion, including its command verb and any context named in the task.
  3. Find the learner’s evidence that relates to that criterion.
  4. Compare what the learner has shown with the full requirement.
  5. Record the decision and feedback using your centre’s process.

For example, if a criterion asks a learner to explain a point, naming it may not be enough. The teacher should check whether the evidence gives the explanation asked for in the criterion. The exact decision depends on the wording of the unit criterion and Pearson’s assessment guidance.

Does the teacher award the qualification grade?

The teacher makes assessment decisions for the unit criteria. The qualification’s overall result follows Pearson’s rules for combining unit results and qualification size. Do not decide from one assignment alone how a learner will finish the whole qualification.

How are decisions checked?

The centre uses internal checks to help ensure that assessment decisions are consistent. This can include another team member checking a sample of decisions. Pearson also carries out external standards verification for the qualification.

checkb.tech can help a teacher review evidence against the criteria, but it is an aid. The teacher and centre remain responsible for assessment decisions and for following Pearson’s requirements.

Related guidance

Use the Pearson Level 2 Business specification and the current Pearson International Centre Guide to Internal Assessment for official criteria and assessment rules.

Check the criteria before the IV does.

checkb.tech reads learner evidence against the official Pearson criteria and reports every criterion as met, partly met or not met — with the evidence cited. It never awards a grade; the teacher stays the assessor.
