Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

5 criteria
A.P1Describe the main features of the Solar System, including its planets.
A.P2Describe the main features of the Universe, excluding the Solar System and including different types of galaxies.
B.P3Describe the different methods used to explore the Universe including the use of different types of telescopes.
B.P4Describe how manned and unmanned space missions collect scientific data.
C.P5Describe the Big Bang Theory and how it is used to obtain the age of the Universe.

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1Explain the relationship between the bodies in the Earth-Moon-Sun system.
A.M2Explain the life cycle of stars.
B.M3Explain why different telescopes are used to observe the Universe.
B.M4Compare manned and unmanned space missions, in terms of scientific data collected and their limitations.
C.M5Explain how evidence supports the Big Bang Theory.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Explain the characteristics of galaxies and galaxy clusters.
B.D2Analyse how the scientific data collected through observation and space missions is being used.
C.D3Evaluate evidence to support the Big Bang Theory and limitations of the theory.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeExplainCompareAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • B. Study methods used to explore our Universe
  • C. Explore theories of how the Universe was formed

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
