Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Describe how numbers and characters can be represented in binary.
A.P2Describe an electronic communication or data transmission system.
A.P3Explain the differences between analogue and digital signals and how they can represent data.
B.P4Describe the function of electronic components and devices.
B.P5Explain the function of each electronic component and device in a given circuit.
C.P6Safely build and test the operation of an active analogue electronic circuit.
C.P7Safely build and test the operation of a digital electronic circuit.
C.P8Use different methods of construction to safely and accurately build and test the operation of a passive analogue circuit, an active analogue electronic circuit and a digital electronic circuit.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Explain the operation of an electronic communication or data transmission system.
A.M2Compare an electronic communication or data transmission system that uses analogue signals with a system that uses digital signals.
B.M2Analyse how a given circuit operates due to the function of each electronic component and device.
C.M3Use different methods of construction to safely and accurately build and test the operation of a passive analogue circuit, an active analogue electronic circuit and a digital electronic circuit showing forward thinking and initiative.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Data for Part 1 (c)
B.D2Sources of information
C.D3Sources of information

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeExplainSafelyUseCompareAnalyseDataSources
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
