Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Explain the safe operation and maintenance requirements and component selection, for a hydraulic and a pneumatic powered system.
B.P2Create circuit diagrams for a hydraulic and a pneumatic circuit, that each contain at least eight components.
B.P3Simulate the operation of a pneumatic and a hydraulic circuit that each contains at least eight components.
C.P4Explain the importance of safe working practices when assembling and testing pneumatic and hydraulic circuits.
C.P5Assemble a hydraulic or pneumatic system containing at least eight components safely.
C.P6Test the operation of a hydraulic or a pneumatic system safely, identifying any faults.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Analyse the safe operation, maintenance requirements, component selection, and key parameters for a hydraulic and a pneumatic powered system, to meet service requirements.
B.M2Produce accurate diagrams for a hydraulic and a pneumatic circuit containing at least eight components to an international standard, to meet the client brief.
B.M3Simulate the correct operation of a pneumatic and a hydraulic circuit determining the effect of changing component parameters to meet the system purpose.
C.M4Develop a fully functioning hydraulic or pneumatic system, safely rectifying faults, while explaining the importance of safe working practices.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, the safe operation, maintenance requirements, component selection and key parameters necessary for a hydraulic and a pneumatic system to meet service requirements, including any improvements.
B.D2Optimise the performance of the pneumatic and hydraulic circuit simulations ensuring that the requirement of the client brief are met.
C.D3Refine, during the process, the performance of a fully functioning pneumatic or hydraulic system, to better meet the client brief, while explaining the importance of safe working practices.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainCreateSimulateAssembleTestAnalyseProduceDevelopEvaluateOptimiseRefine
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
