Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

7 criteria
A.P1Build a circuit for each type of power electronic device safely and determine the operating characteristics of each.
A.P2Explain, using semiconductor theory and test results, the correct operation of each type of power electronic device.
B.P3Build, using BJT and MOSFET devices, a DC motor speed control circuit safely and determine the operating characteristics of each.
B.P4Explain, using test results and theory, the correct operation of DC motor speed control circuits.
B.P5Build a controlled and uncontrolled AC–DC rectifier and a DC–DC converter safely and determine the operating characteristics of each.
B.P6Explain, using test results and theory, the operation of voltage converters, including controlled and uncontrolled AC–DC, DC–DC and DC–AC.
C.P7Explain how power electronic devices can be used in two different applications to improve sustainability.

Merit

7 criteria
A.M1Build a circuit for each type of power electronic device safely and determine accurate operating characteristics of each.
A.M2Analyse, using semiconductor theory and test results, the correct operation of each type of power electronic device.
B.M3Build, using BJT and MOSFET devices, a DC motor speed control circuit safely and determine accurate operating characteristics of each.
B.M4Analyse, using test results and theory, the correct operation of DC motor speed control circuits.
B.M5Build a controlled and uncontrolled AC–DC rectifier and a DC–DC converter safely and accurately determine the operating characteristics of each.
B.M6Analyse, using test results and theory, the operation of voltage converters, including controlled and uncontrolled AC–DC, DC–DC and DC–AC.
C.M7Analyse how power electronic devices can be used in two different applications to improve sustainability.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, the operation and switching behaviour of each type of power electronic device, comparing semiconductor theory and the results from safely conducted experiments.
B.D2Evaluate the operation of DC motor speed and direction control and voltage conversion circuits employing a range of power electronic devices safely, using test results and theory.
C.D3Evaluate how power electronic devices can be used in two different applications to improve sustainability.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

BuildExplainAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
