Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Explain the operation of a thermal energy power station.
A.P2Explain the operation of a pressurised or a boiling water nuclear power station.
B.P3Explain the safety features of a transmission network using both overhead and underground cables
B.P4Describe the construction of the electricity towers and cables used in the design of a given transmission network.
C.P5Explain the client’s requirements for a primary and secondary substation on a distribution network
C.P6Produce a design for a distribution system based on a client brief, describing the construction of the substations

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1Compare the operation of a thermal and a pressurised or a boiling water nuclear power station.
B.M2Justify the safety features given in the design of a transmission network
B.M3Justify the choice of towers and cables used in the design of a given transmission network, making reference to the manufacturer’s data sheets.
C.M4Analyse the client’s requirements for the substations, considering the relative merits of building a new or using existing capacity
C.M5Produce a detailed design for a distribution system, while documenting alternative solutions

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, thermal and nuclear power stations, including environmental concerns and public perceptions of each.
B.D2Evaluate the design, including safety features, towers and cables, of a transmission network, suggesting possible design improvements
C.D3Refine, during the process, the design for a distribution system that fully meets the client’s brief, justifying the choices made

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainDescribeProduceCompareJustifyAnalyseEvaluateRefine
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
