Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Explain the technology used in and characteristics of at least two different printed circuit boards contained in products.
A.P2Explain the causes and consequences of heat gain and thermal management methods used in at least two different printed circuit boards contained in products.
A.P3Explain the manufacturing processes and quality control methods used in at least two different printed circuit boards contained in products.
B.P4Capture a direct current and alternating current circuit(s) schematic and simulate the correct operation of the direct current circuit.
C.P5Design a printed circuit board and generate documentation for manufacture.
C.P6Manufacture safely a printed circuit board and identify any issues with the quality and functionality
D.P7Explain how health and safety, design and manufacturing and general engineering skills were applied effectively during the manufacture of the printed circuit board.
D.P8Explain how relevant behaviours were applied effectively during the design and manufacture of a printed circuit board.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Analyse the design and the manufacture of at least two different printed circuit boards contained in products.
B.M2Capture accurately and efficiently a direct current and alternating current circuit(s) schematic and simulate the correct operation including the generation of representative circuit(s) data.
C.M3Design and manufacture accurately and efficiently a printed circuit board that functions as intended, while documenting alternative solutions.
D.M4Recommend improvements to the design and manufacture of the printed circuit board and to the relevant behaviours applied.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate, using vocational and high quality written language, the design and manufacture of at least two different printed circuit boards contained in products and consider how they are likely to evolve.
B.D2Capture, following industry conventions, a direct current and alternating current circuit(s) schematic and use simulation data to create a technical specification for the circuit(s)
CD.D3Refine, during the process, the development of a printed circuit board safely to improve its performance, whilst applying relevant behaviours and general engineering skills to a professional standard.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainCaptureDesignManufactureAnalyseRecommendEvaluateRefine
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
