Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

7 criteria
A.P1Explain, using examples, the characteristics of analogue and digital signals.
A.P2Draw a block diagram of a complex analogue and a complex digital electronic system.
A.P3Explain the operation of open- and closed-loop systems in a complex analogue and a complex digital system using block diagrams and calculate the output of each given input.
B.P4Measure signals safely in an analogue, a digital, and a mixed electronic system that includes signal conversion.
B.P5Explain, using theoretical calculations and test results, the structure and operation of an analogue, a digital, and a mixed electronic system incorporating signal conversion.
C.P6Produce a fault-finding plan for an analogue, a digital and a mixed electronic system that includes signal conversion and safe working practice.
C.P7Test each of the three systems safely, correctly diagnosing a single fault in at least the analogue or the digital system.

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1Analyse signals and their flow in the two systems calculating the outputs for open- and closed-loop systems.
B.M2Measure signals accurately at selected test points, in the three systems incorporating signal conversion.
B.M3Analyse, using theoretical calculations and test results, the structure and operation of the three systems that includes signal conversion.
C.M4Produce a detailed fault-finding plan for the three systems that includes signal conversion
C.M5Test each of the three systems, correctly diagnosing a single fault in at least the mixed system and the analogue or the digital system

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, the characteristics of the two systems in open- and closed-loop systems, calculating the expected outputs.
B.D2Evaluate the structure and operation of an analogue, a digital and a mixed electronic system incorporating signal conversion in open- and closed-loop control systems, using safely obtained test results and theoretical calculations.
C.D3Diagnose correctly a single fault in each of the three systems, using fault-finding plans, documentation, skills and working safely.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainDrawMeasureProduceTestAnalyseEvaluateDiagnose
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
