Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Conduct experiments safely to determine the motions and energy transfers taking place in a uniformly accelerated simple linear and a simple rotational system.
A.P2Prepare, using experimental results and calculations, models for the simple linear and simple rotational mechanical systems.
B.P3Calculate the centripetal acceleration and forces acting in a simple rotating system.
B.P4Determine dynamic equilibrium for a simple system of unbalanced rotating masses.
C.P5Determine the kinetic and dynamic parameters of a simple lifting machine.
C.P6Conduct experiments safely to determine the dynamic properties of a pendulum and a spring mechanical system.
C.P7Explain, using experimental results and calculations, the dynamic properties of a pendulum and a spring system.
C.P8Determine the output motion of at least two linkage mechanisms for given input parameters.

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1Conduct experiments accurately to determine the dynamic effects associated with the acceleration of a simple linear and a simple rotational system.
A.M2Prepare, using experimental results and calculations, accurate models for the simple linear and simple rotational mechanical systems, comparing the two models.
B.M3Determine accurately the performance of a simple and a complex rotating system due to the effects of centripetal acceleration, determining dynamic equilibrium for the unbalanced system.
C.M4Determine accurately the kinetic and dynamic parameters of simple and complex lifting machines.
C.M5Analyse the dynamic parameters and operation of a pendulum, a spring and a linkage mechanism that exhibit a form of simple harmonic motion, comparing the theoretical calculations to safely conducted experiments where appropriate.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate a simple linear and a simple rotational mechanical system, comparing the results from safely and accurately conducted experiments and calculations, while using the principles to model accurately a complex system in which both linear and rotational motion are present.
B.D2Evaluate accurately the performance of simple and complex rotating systems due to the effects of centripetal acceleration, determining dynamic equilibrium for the unbalanced system.
C.D3Evaluate the dynamic parameters and operation of a simple and a complex lifting machine and the motion of a pendulum, a spring and a linkage mechanism that exhibit a form of simple harmonic motion, comparing the theoretical calculations to safely conducted experiments where appropriate.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ConductPrepareCalculateDetermineExplainAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
