Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Explain the properties and characteristics of gases and liquids and how they affect their use as fluid power mediums.
A.P2Explain hydrostatic and pneumatic fluid principles and apply them to determine hydrostatic and pneumatic component and system parameters.
B.P3Conduct experiments safely to determine the behaviour and parameters of at least one tapered pipe fluid system.
B.P4Conduct experiments safely to determine the behaviour and parameters of two measurement instrument fluid systems.
B.P5Explain, using the results and theoretical calculations, the behaviour and parameters of fluids in at least one tapered pipe and at least two measurement instrument fluid systems.
C.P6Explain the nature of linear momentum principles and their application in determining fluid flow parameters and the operation of nozzle systems and fluid turbines.

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1Analyse the properties and characteristics of gases and liquids and how they affect their use as fluid power mediums.
A.M2Analyse hydrostatic and pneumatic fluid principles and their application to determine hydrostatic and pneumatic component and system parameters.
B.M3Conduct experiments safely and accurately to determine the behaviour and parameters of at least one tapered pipe and at least two measurement instrument fluid systems.
B.M4Analyse, using the results and theoretical calculations, the behaviour and parameters of fluids in at least one tapered pipe and at least two measuring instrument fluid systems.
C.M5Analyse the nature of linear momentum principles and their application in determining fluid flow parameters and the operation of nozzle systems and fluid turbines.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, the application of hydrostatic and pneumatic fluid principles to determine hydrostatic and pneumatic system parameters.
B.D2Evaluate the behaviour and parameters of at least one tapered pipe and at least two measuring instrument fluid systems, comparing the results from safely and accurately conducted experiments against theoretical calculations.
C.D3Evaluate the nature of linear momentum principles and their application in determining fluid flow parameters and optimise the operation of nozzle systems and fluid turbines.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainConductAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
