Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Explain the technologies used in website applications for the control of physical devices
B.P2Explain the security threats to and vulnerabilities of website applications and the security protection measures available.
C.P3Design a secure website application to control a physical device, including a test plan and any technical constraints.
C.P4Review the design of the secure website application to ensure that any functionality requirements from the client brief are met.
D.P5Build the functional and secure website application, using the design documentation, to control a physical device.
D.P6Test, using the test plans, the secure website for functionality and data storage, repairing any faults to ensure that it meets the client brief.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Compare the technologies used in website applications for the control of physical devices.
B.M2Analyse the security threats to and vulnerabilities of website applications and the security protection measures available, including how these impact on performance and usability.
C.M3Design a secure website to control a physical device, while justifying the design decisions to meet the client brief and including a test plan, any technical constraints and alternative solutions.
D.M4Refine the secure functional website application to meet the client brief, including an effective use interface and data storage.

Distinction

2 criteria
AB.D1Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, the effectiveness of the technologies and security protection measures used in the provision of a robust and secure website application.
CD.D2Optimise a functional fully annotated, efficient, stable and secure website application with an effective user interface and including data storage that operates as intended, using a comprehensive set of justified design and test documentation.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainDesignReviewBuildTestCompareAnalyseRefineEvaluateOptimise
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
