BTEC International Level 3 Green Energy

Unit 15: Unit 15 — assessment criteria

BTEC International Level 3 Unit 15 (Unit 15) — 60 Guided Learning Hours.

Internal / Optional60 GLH15 criteria

Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Describe how solar radiation is converted into thermal energy and electrical energy in solar systems.
A.P2Explain typical end uses of solar thermal and photovoltaic systems across domestic and commercial applications.
B.P3Describe key components of solar thermal and photovoltaic systems and their roles within integrated installations.
B.P4Explain common system configurations, including grid‑connected, off‑grid and hybrid solar arrangements.
C.P5Compare environmental and operational factors that affect solar thermal and photovoltaic system performance.
C.P6Explain how user behaviour and control strategies influence energy capture, storage and utilisation.
D.P7Describe methods used to obtain basic performance data from solar thermal and photovoltaic systems.
D.P8Explain how measured performance data is compared with expected or predicted system behaviour.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Compare differences in performance characteristics, efficiencies and output profiles between thermal and photovoltaic technologies.
C.M2Analyse how component selection and configuration influence system integration, energy distribution and overall functionality.
C.M3Analyse interactions between environmental conditions, controls and user demand affecting overall system efficiency.
D.M4Examine performance data to identify causes of underperformance or efficiency losses in solar systems.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Analyse suitability of solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies for contrasting energy demands and environmental conditions.
BC.D2Evaluate how system design, controls and operational factors collectively determine the effectiveness and reliability of integrated solar systems.
D.D3Evaluate system performance outcomes to judge effectiveness, limitations and environmental contribution of integrated solar installations.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeExplainCompareAnalyseExamineEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
