BTEC International Level 3 Green Energy

Unit 16: Unit 16 — assessment criteria

BTEC International Level 3 Unit 16 (Unit 16) — 60 Guided Learning Hours.

Internal / Optional60 GLH14 criteria

Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Describe the basic operating principles of rechargeable batteries.
A.P2Explain different battery chemistries and their applications in energy storage and transport systems.
B.P3Carry out battery energy storage system designing to meet given energy and power requirements.
B.P4Select appropriate battery configurations and system components for a given application.
C.P5Describe charging and discharging characteristics of battery energy storage systems.
C.P6Examine factors that affect battery performance and degradation.
D.P7Describe safety risks associated with battery energy storage systems.
D.P8Explain recycling, reuse and environmental considerations for battery systems.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Explain how battery chemistry influences performance, lifespan and suitability for different applications.
B.M2Explain how design constraints and compromises influence battery energy storage system design.
C.M3Explain how variations in charging methods and operating conditions impact battery efficiency, performance and longevity.
D.M4Explain how safety and environmental considerations influence battery system design and operation.

Distinction

2 criteria
AB.D1Analyse how battery chemistry, system design and operating conditions affect the performance and reliability of battery energy storage systems.
CD.D2Evaluate the sustainability of battery energy storage systems, considering safety, recycling and environmental impacts across stationary and transport applications.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeExplainCarrySelectExamineAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
