BTEC International Level 3 Land Based Studies

Unit 20: Unit 20 — assessment criteria

BTEC International Level 3 Unit 20 (Unit 20) — 60 Guided Learning Hours.

Internal / Optional60 GLH14 criteria

Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Contrast the life cycles of annual, biennial and perennial crops.
A.P2Explain the biological and physical factors influencing the growth and development of contrasting forage crops.
B.P3Explain possible remedial actions to maintain crop health for contrasting forage crops throughout the grazing season.
B.P4Competently carry out grazing management tasks to meet objectives and legislative requirements.
C.P5Compare contrasting methods of conserving forage crops used to meet quality requirements.
C.P6Explain possible actions arising from the results of laboratory analysis of conserved forage crops.

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1Assess the growth and development characteristics of contrasting forage crops.
B.M2Recommend remedial actions to maintain crop health for contrasting forage crops throughout the grazing season.
B.M3Efficiently carry out grazing management tasks to meet objectives and legislative requirements.
C.M4Assess the effect of contrasting conservation methods on forage crop quality.
C.M5Assess the implications of the results of laboratory analysis of conserved forage crops.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Evaluate how biological and physical factors influence forage crop growth and development
B.D2Carry out grazing management tasks with a high degree of accuracy, including justification of remedial actions to maintain the health of contrasting forage crops
C.D3Evaluate the results of the analysis of contrasting conserved forage types, relating the results to the conservation methods used.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ContrastExplainCompetentlyCompareAssessRecommendEfficientlyEvaluateCarry
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
