Unit 4 introduces health and safety in care settings through hazards, responsibilities and risk assessment. It is a 30 GLH internally assessed optional unit in Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Health and Social Care.
What does the unit cover?
The three learning aims move from identifying potential hazards in health and social care environments, to understanding key health and safety principles, then applying risk assessment processes. Learners consider how employers, employees and service users have responsibilities in maintaining safer environments.
The unit connects recognising a hazard with considering the risk and the control measures available. Its practical context is everyday activities and environments where people receive care.
Planning and assessment
Pearson classifies Unit 4 as internal, rather than a Pearson Set Assignment. The centre assesses work against the unit requirements. The specification suggests evidence such as hazard information and risk assessments; teachers should check the current unit guidance when planning tasks.
Unit 4 is optional across the suite. See Unit 3 and Unit 5, or return to the qualification overview. Check the Pearson Issue 1 specification for current requirements.
