Unit 5 prepares learners for vocational experience in a health or social care setting and asks them to reflect on their working skills. It is a 60 GLH internally assessed optional unit. Pearson specifies at least 20 hours of vocational experience, in addition to the guided learning hours.

What does the unit cover?

Learning aim A focuses on applying for a period of experience, including communicating personal information and preparing for an interview. Aim B looks at working skills and interpersonal skills in care settings. Aim C asks learners to reflect on their own performance and consider development or progression.

The unit therefore combines preparation, experience and reflection. Pearson describes an authentic care setting as ideal; work-related practice, simulation and role-play can complement the experience.

Planning the experience

Centres need to plan the placement or placements so learners can complete the required minimum hours and gather appropriate evidence. The 20 hours do not count towards the unit’s 60 GLH. The specification also describes evidence such as application materials, observation or witness records, and a reflective logbook; follow the current specification and centre arrangements.

Check the criteria before the IV does.

checkb.tech reads learner evidence against the official Pearson criteria and reports every criterion as met, partly met or not met — with the evidence cited. It never awards a grade; the teacher stays the assessor.
