Role in qualificationOptional unit

Unit 9 examines how diet affects health and how nutritional needs differ between people. The 60 GLH unit also covers food safety and hygiene in preparation, cooking and service.

What does the unit cover?

Four learning aims take learners through dietary needs at different life stages, effects of unbalanced diets, specific dietary needs of service users, and safe food practices. The content includes planning for individuals with specific needs, including needs related to medical conditions or religious and cultural requirements.

This unit brings together nutrition knowledge and practical care considerations. Dietary planning should be based on the individual and the relevant information in the task and specification, rather than a one-size-fits-all menu.

Assessment and related learning

Unit 9 is an internally assessed optional unit. Pearson’s specification describes evidence such as diet plans and a report; check the current unit requirements when planning the assessment.

It links naturally with Unit 2: Ensuring Healthy Living and Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology. For the authoritative scope, see Pearson’s Issue 1 specification.

Check the criteria before the IV does.

checkb.tech reads learner evidence against the official Pearson criteria and reports every criterion as met, partly met or not met — with the evidence cited. It never awards a grade; the teacher stays the assessor.
