A mandatory unit is one every learner on that qualification size must complete. An optional unit is chosen from the options Pearson allows for that size. The required mix differs between the Award, Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma, so a unit list for one size should not be copied for another.

What does this mean for teachers?

Start by checking the learner's exact qualification title. Use that qualification's structure table in Pearson's specification to confirm its mandatory units and the number of optional units needed. The centre chooses from the permitted options when planning the course. Learners cannot simply pick any unit from the full subject list.

Pearson requires learners to pass all mandatory units. The rules for optional unit results differ by qualification size. Before deciding what an unclassified optional unit means for a learner, check the current qualification rules.

What should I read next?

See the unit counts for each Level 2 Business size, or read how to choose units for a programme. The Level 2 Business unit pages are a reference for exploring units and their criteria.

For the official unit combinations, use Pearson's BTEC International Level 2 Business specification.

Check the criteria before the IV does.

checkb.tech reads learner evidence against the official Pearson criteria and reports every criterion as met, partly met or not met — with the evidence cited. It never awards a grade; the teacher stays the assessor.
