GLH means guided learning hours. Pearson uses this number to show the expected amount of teaching, directed activity and assessment for a qualification or unit. It helps teachers compare course sizes and plan time across the year.

These figures are for Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Business. Other BTEC courses may use different sizes and structures, so check the exact qualification title before using a figure.

What does “guided” mean?

Guided learning is time when a teacher or another member of the teaching team is leading or supporting learning. It can include teaching, directed class activities and assessment. GLH is not the same as every hour a learner spends studying. Independent homework and extra practice may take additional time.

For example, a learner might attend planned lessons and complete a supervised assessment as part of the guided hours. They may also spend extra time reading or practising outside those sessions. That extra independent time is not automatically counted as GLH.

Pearson lists these four sizes in the Level 2 Business specification. The qualification size is not the number of lessons in a learner's timetable. Your centre plans how to deliver the course within the expected guided hours.

How can GLH help with planning?

  • Use the GLH total to understand the planned size of the qualification.
  • Use each unit's GLH to help plan teaching and assessment time.
  • Check the unit structure for the qualification size your learners take.
  • Leave time for teaching, practice, assessment and any centre checks.

GLH is a planning measure, not a complete timetable. Your learners may need more time to practise a topic or understand a task.

How does GLH relate to units?

Each unit has its own GLH value. The total qualification hours come from the units in that qualification structure. The number of units depends on the size: the Award has four units, while the larger qualifications include more. Check the course before quoting a number

Before sharing a GLH figure with a learner or colleague, check the level, subject and qualification size in Pearson's specification. A Level 2 Award and a Level 2 Diploma are both Business qualifications, but they are different sizes and include different unit requirements.

Check the criteria before the IV does.

checkb.tech reads learner evidence against the official Pearson criteria and reports every criterion as met, partly met or not met — with the evidence cited. It never awards a grade; the teacher stays the assessor.
