Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Predict the products that form when solutions of electrolytes and molten electrolytes are electrolysed.
A.P2Describe the process of electroplating.
B.P3Describe the principles of dynamic equilibrium.
B.P4Describe what is meant by the term 'molar volume'.
C.P5Describe the two different methods used to produce ethanol.
C.P6Describe the features and reactions of the homologous series of alcohols.

Merit

6 criteria
A.M1Explain the redox processes that occur when ions migrate to electrodes during electrolysis.
A.M2Explain how copper is purified using an electrolytic process.
B.M3Explain the changes which happen in equilibrium systems when the temperature and pressure of the system is changed.
B.M4Apply Avogadro's law to calculate volumes of gases involved in gas phase reactions.
C.M5Compare the different reaction conditions used to produce ethanol.
C.M6Describe the applications of esterification reactions.

Distinction

6 criteria
A.D1Construct half-equations to represent the electrode reactions taking place during electrolysis.
A.D2Account quantitatively for the changes occurring at the electrodes during the electrolytic purification of copper.
B.D3Explain how conditions are adjusted in industry in order to achieve the maximum yield in the fastest time from equilibrium reactions.
B.D4Carry out molar volume calculations.
C.D5Evaluate the factors influencing the choice of method used to make ethanol.
C.D6Construct equations for esterification reactions.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

PredictDescribeExplainApplyCompareConstructAccountCarryEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
