Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

9 criteria
A.P1Describe the ionising nature of X-rays and how these are produced in an X-ray tube.
A.P2Describe the relationship between the variables used to find the current for a beam of charged particles, using words and symbols.
A.P3Describe the relationship between the variables used to find the kinetic energy for a beam of charged particles, using words and symbols.
A.P4Describe the uses and advantages of X-rays for treatment and diagnosis in medicine.
A.P5Describe how to minimise the risks of using X-rays in medicine.
B.P6Describe how cyclotrons can be used to produce fast-moving charged particles.
C.P7Relate the different types of radioactive decay to the position of isotopes on the N-Z graph and proton and nucleon numbers.
C.P8Identify the uses of radioactive isotopes in medicine and describe the precautions taken to reduce the hazards of medical isotopes for hospital staff and patients.
D.P9Relate qualitatively the macroscopic properties of ideal gases to their microscopic properties.

Merit

6 criteria
A.M1Calculate current and kinetic energy for a beam of charged particles, using appropriate equations.
A.M2Assess the benefits and risks of X-rays in medicine.
B.M3Explain how proton radiation from a cyclotron may be used to change stable elements into radioactive isotopes for medical purposes.
C.M4Balance equations for radioactive decay and describe the relationship between quarks and beta decay.
C.M5Explain the advantages of using radioactive sources in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions despite the hazards involved.
D.M6Calculate the temperature, pressure, and volume of fixed masses of gases, converting between Celsius and Kelvin scales using appropriate equations.

Distinction

4 criteria
A.D1Explain why the current and accelerating potential difference of a beam of particles used to produce X-rays for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes needs to be carefully controlled.
B.D2Calculate momentum and kinetic energy for two-body elastic and inelastic collisions in one dimension only, using appropriate equations.
C.D3Explain how momentum, charge and mass-energy are conserved in positron-electron annihilation.
D.D4Explain the application of gas laws to bottled gases.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeRelateIdentifyCalculateAssessExplainBalance
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Investigate X-Rays
  • B. Investigate the motion of particles
  • C. Investigate radioactivity

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
