Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

6 criteria
A.P1Investigate temperature changes associated with exothermic and endothermic reactions using primary data.
B.P2Describe the fractional distillation of crude oil to produce a range of useful products.
B.P3Draw accurately the structural and displayed formulae of organic molecules.
B.P4Identify an alkene and carboxylic acid using primary observations.
B.P5Describe the uses of organic compounds in our society.
C.P6Describe a use of nanochemicals, smart and specialised materials.

Merit

6 criteria
A.M1Explain why an overall reaction is exothermic or endothermic.
B.M2Explain how fractional distillation separates compounds due to different boiling ranges.
B.M3Describe the bonding and structure of organic molecules.
B.M4Explain how a series of experiments can be used to identify organic compounds based upon their solubility and reactions.
B.M5Explain the problems associated with the use of organic molecules.
C.M6Explain the benefits of using nanochemicals, smart and specialised materials.

Distinction

5 criteria
A.D1Calculate the energy changes that take place during exothermic and endothermic reactions.
B.D2Analyse the relationship between boiling range and length of carbon chain of fractions.
B.D3Explain the results of the experiments to identify organic compounds in terms of their reaction type, structural and displayed formulae, and bonding.
B.D4Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of using organic materials.
C.D5Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of using nanochemicals, smart and specialised materials.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

InvestigateDescribeDrawIdentifyExplainCalculateAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Investigate and understand enthalpy changes associated with chemical reactions
  • B. Investigate organic compounds used in society
  • C. Explore the uses of nanochemicals and new materials

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
