Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

9 criteria
A.P1Describe the physical and chemical properties of group 1 and 7 elements.
A.P2Compare properties of ionic and covalent substances.
A.P3Draw dot-and-cross diagrams of simple ionic and covalent substances.
B.P4Describe how chemical substances are used based on their physical properties.
B.P5Describe how chemical substances are used based on their chemical properties.
C.P6Describe the factors that can affect the rates of chemical reactions.
C.P7Identify the number and types of atoms in balanced chemical equations.
D.P8Describe the human activities that affect the Earth and its environment.
D.P9Describe natural factors that have changed the surface and atmosphere of the Earth.

Merit

7 criteria
A.M1Describe trends in the physical and chemical properties of group 1 and 7 elements.
A.M2Explain the properties of ionic and covalent substances.
A.M3Describe the formation of ionic and covalent substances.
B.M4Explain how physical and chemical properties of chemical substances make them suitable for their uses.
C.M5Explain how different factors affect the rate of industrial reactions.
C.M6Explain the terms 'yield' and 'atom economy' in relation to specific chemical reactions.
D.M7Discuss the extent to which human activity has changed the environment, in comparison to natural activity.

Distinction

5 criteria
A.D1Explain the trends in chemical properties of group 1 and 7 elements in terms of electronic structure.
B.D2Relate applications of compounds to their properties and to their bonding and structure
B.D3Assess the suitability of different types of substance for a specified use.
C.D4Analyse how different factors affect the rate and yield of an industrial reaction.
D.D5Evaluate possible solutions to changes in the environment, occurring from natural or human activity.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeCompareDrawIdentifyExplainDiscussRelateAssessAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Investigate chemical reactivity and bonding

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
