Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

9 criteria
A.P1Describe the role of genes and the environment in variation.
A.P2Describe how characteristics are used to classify organisms.
A.P3Describe the different ways in which organisms show interdependence.
B.P4Describe the impact that different human activities have on ecosystems.
B.P5Describe how living and non-living indicators can be used to measure levels of pollutants.
B.P6Describe the different methods used to help reduce the impact of human activities on ecosystems.
C.P7Describe how pathogens affect human health.
C.P8Describe two different treatment regimes: one used to prevent a disease and one used to treat a disease.
C.P9Describe how lifestyle choices can affect human health.

Merit

7 criteria
A.M1Explain the role of genes and the environment in evolution.
A.M2Discuss the factors that affect the relationship between different organisms.
B.M3Analyse the effects of pollutants on ecosystems.
B.M4Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of methods used to reduce the impact of human activity on ecosystems.
C.M5Explain how bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics.
C.M6Explain the use of pedigree analysis.
C.M7Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of vaccination programmes.

Distinction

4 criteria
A.D1Evaluate the impact of genes and the environment on the survival or extinction of organisms.
B.D2Explain the long-term effects of pollutants on living organisms and ecosystems.
B.D3Evaluate the success of methods to reduce the impact of human activity on an ecosystem, for a given scenario.
C.D4Evaluate the use of antibiotics, pedigree analysis and vaccination programmes in the treatment and prevention of childhood illnesses.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeExplainDiscussAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • C. Explore the factors that affect human health

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
