Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

10 criteria
A.P1Produce accurate graphs to represent uniform and non-uniform motion using primary data.
A.P2Calculate speed and velocity for simple experiments.
A.P3Describe the conservation of energy for simple experiments, including energy transformation diagrams.
B.P4Describe the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on objects.
B.P5Calculate the work done by forces acting on objects for simple experiments.
B.P6in response to an applied force.
C.P7Describe, using diagrams, reflection and refraction of light for simple applications.
C.P8Describe the importance of a medium for the transmission of sound waves through a variety of substances for simple applications.
D.P9Measure currents and voltages in series and parallel electric circuits.
D.P10Investigate an application of thermistors or LDRs using primary data.

Merit

8 criteria
A.M1Interpret graphs to identify objects that are stationary, moving at a constant speed and moving with increasing or decreasing speed.
A.M2Calculate kinetic energy and changes in gravitational potential energy.
B.M3Calculate the force on objects, in relation to their mass and acceleration for an application.
B.M4Explain how friction and normal reaction forces are produced in response to an applied force.
C.M5Describe how lenses and mirrors can affect rays of light.
C.M6Describe the propagation of sound waves, including compression and rarefaction.
D.M7Calculate resistances from measured currents and voltages.
D.M8Mathematically or graphically process the results of the investigation into thermistors or LDRs to draw conclusions.

Distinction

7 criteria
A.D1Calculate the gradient for distance-time graphs and the gradient and area of speed-time graphs.
A.D2Explain how changes in energy will affect transportation and stopping distances.
B.D3Explain the various forces involved, and their approximate sizes, in a variety of applications.
C.D4Explain how reflection and refraction of light can be used in applications.
C.D5Explain how sound waves can be applied in everyday uses.
D.D6Analyse an everyday life situation in which the resistance of a conducting wire is not constant.
D.D7Evaluate the investigation into thermistors or LDRs, suggesting improvements to a real-life application.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ProduceCalculateDescribeInMeasureInvestigateInterpretExplainMathematicallyAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
