Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

11 criteria
A.P1Explain the location and role of organs involved in digestion.
A.P2Explain the key features and applications of transition metal compounds
A.P3Describe symptoms of nutrient deficiency as a result of dietary-related disease.
B.P3Determine solubility curves for inorganic compounds
B.P4Investigate enthalpy changes of neutralisation and solution for inorganic compounds
B.P5Explain the organisation and function of the nervous system.
C.P5Compare experimentally determined pH values against calculated values
C.P6Plot pH curves for a range of acid-base titrations and determine the acid dissociation constant Ka, for a weak acid
C.P7Investigate the action of a buffer solution
D.P8Investigate the concentration of analytes using redox titration and colorimetry
D.P9Compare experimentally determined cell voltages for metal/metal ion electrochemical cells with calculated values

Merit

8 criteria
A.M1Analyse the role of digestive enzymes on each part of the digestive system.
A.M2Explain the use of corrective treatments for nutrient deficiency.
B.M3Analyse how the functions of the nervous and endocrine systems are interrelated.
B.M4Predict the solubility of inorganic compounds by comparison of calculated ion product values against literature values for the solubility product Ksp
C.M4Analyse the relationship between the endocrine and nervous system in maintaining homeostasis.
C.M5Perform complex calculations involving pH and Ka, including rearrangement of equations
C.M6Explain the shape of pH curves and the use of appropriate indicators
D.M7Analyse a range of redox reactions and electrochemical cells in terms of oxidation numbers, equations and standard electrode potentials involved

Distinction

4 criteria
A.D1Analyse the reactions of Period 3 inorganic compounds and transition metal complexes
B.D2Assess the effect of ionic charge and radius upon hydration enthalpy, lattice energy and solubility
C.D3Evaluate the use of different acid-base titration techniques and the efficiency of buffer solutions
D.D4Evaluate the use of redox reactions and standard electrode potentials in analytical and commercial applications

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainDescribeDetermineInvestigateComparePlotAnalysePredictPerformAssessEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
