Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Determine the classification of given materials by considering their properties.
B.P2Describe how different types of telescopes are used for astronomical observation
B.P3Explain the relative positions of night-time astronomical objects
B.P4Explain the relevant positions and features of daytime astronomical objects
C.P4Explain uses, benefits and limitations of polymers.
C.P5Explain the main factors associated with achieving space flight for manned and unmanned exploration.
D.P6Explain current knowledge and theories of the life cycle of stars
D.P7Describe the evidence linked to theories of the evolution of the universe

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1Compare the microscopic structures and classifications of different given materials to determine their macroscopic properties.
B.M2Assess the findings of practical astronomical observations and their importance in astronomy
C.M3Justify the use of additives and methods used for testing the suitability of different types of polymers for given applications.
D.M4Assess the processes of star formation, their life cycles and evolution
D.M5Explain the evidence linked to theories of the evolution of the universe related to observed phenomenon and its composition

Distinction

5 criteria
A.D1Analyse the microscopic and macroscopic structure of different materials to classify by group according to their properties.
B.D2Evaluate uses, benefits, environmental impact and health and safety risks of using nanotechnology materials for given applications.
C.D3Evaluate methods of testing, the uses, benefits, limitations and environmental risks of different types of polymers for given applications.
CD.D3Evaluate the future of space flight and space exploration and research.
D.D4Evaluate benefits and limitations of using materials in order to reduce carbon emissions.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DetermineDescribeExplainCompareAssessJustifyAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
