Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

15 criteria
A.P1Explain the different types of structural isomerism and steroisomerism
A.P2Explain the reactions of carbonyl compounds
A.P3Explain the reactions of carboxylic acids and their derivatives
A.P4Explain the reactions of nitrogen containing organic compounds
B.P2Use microscopy to observe and draw the stages of mitosis and meiosis.
B.P3Explain the structure and function of human chromosomes.
B.P5Discuss the structure of benzene using sigma and pi bonding, providing evidence for delocalisation in the ring
B.P6Explain the reactions of benzene and mono-substituted aromatic compounds
C.P4Collect and record data for mono and dihybrid phenotypic ratios.
C.P5Explain genetic crosses between non-affected, affected and carriers of genetic conditions.
C.P7Carry out practical synthesis of organic compounds safely and qualitatively test products.
D.P6Extract, separate and amplify DNA.
D.P7Explain the use of genetic engineering technologies in industry and medicine.
D.P8Explain the principles and use of spectroscopic techniques to identify organic compounds
D.P9Explain the operation of GC and HPLC instrumentation to separate and identify organic compounds

Merit

11 criteria
A.M1Discuss the functional role of nucleic acids in DNA in the stages of protein synthesis.
A.M2Construct a range of mechanisms for organic compounds
A.M3Explain the reactions of difunctional organic compounds, including polymerization
B.M2Discuss the behaviour of the chromosomes during the cell cycle stages of mitosis and meiosis.
B.M4Analyse the effects of different mono-substituents on the electrophilic substitution mechanism of the benzene ring
C.M3Analyse data to explain the correlation between observed patterns of monohybrid and dihybrid inheritance.
C.M4Apply Mendel’s laws of inheritance to the results of genetic crosses.
C.M5Explain the chemical reactions carried out in terms of the functional groups, reagents, mechanism and reaction conditions involved.
D.M5Analyse the uses and implications of genetic engineering technologies in industry and medicine.
D.M6Relate different spectra and percentage composition data to the structure of known organic compounds
D.M7Determine the identity and amount of organic compounds using GC and HPLC chromatograms

Distinction

4 criteria
A.D1Plan the multi-step synthesis of functional group organic molecules
B.D2Evaluate how the behaviour of the chromosomes leads to variation.
C.D3Make valid predictions on patterns of monohybrid and dihybrid inheritance and variation using principles of inheritance.
D.D4Make valid predictions on patterns of monohybrid and dihybrid inheritance and variation using principles of inheritance.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainUseDiscussCollectCarryExtractConstructAnalyseApplyRelateDeterminePlanEvaluateMake
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
