Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

12 criteria
A.P1Explain the main structures and functions of nervous and musculoskeletal systems.
A.P2Demonstrate accurate determination of enthalpy changes and assess the quality of the results.
A.P3Explain the concept of entropy and its significance for different chemical processes.
B.P2Explain the structure, function, and basic regulation of cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
B.P4Investigate the effect of concentration of different reactants on the rate of reaction, determining accurate values from concentration-time plots.
B.P5Investigate the effect of temperature and catalysis on the rate of reaction.
C.P3Explain the structure and function of human reproductive anatomy.
C.P4Describe how hormones are involved in gamete development and conception.
C.P6Explain the features of an equilibrium reaction and the effect of changing conditions.
C.P7Determine the equilibrium constant for reactions using different experimental methods.
C.P8Carry out calculations involving Kp and partial pressures of gases.
D.P9Explain identified aspects of the operation of an industrial process in terms of physical chemical concepts.

Merit

9 criteria
A.M1Explain how nervous and musculoskeletal systems interact to coordinate movement, referencing specific anatomical and physiological features.
A.M2Calculate entropy changes for a range of reactions.
B.M2Analyse regulatory mechanisms, using examples, to show system control and imbalance impacts.
B.M3Demonstrate accurate determination of reaction order, overall reaction equation, rate constant and its units from data.
B.M4Carry out calculations to accurately determine the activation energy of a reaction from data on the rate constant at different temperatures.
C.M3Explain how the regulation of male and female reproductive systems can affect human reproductive health.
C.M5Perform complex calculations involving Kc, Kp, total pressure and mole fractions.
C.M6Calculate and interpret values of Gibbs energy, equilibrium constant and temperature.
D.M7Discuss actions that may be taken to control a chemical process.

Distinction

4 criteria
A.D1Analyse the interrelationship of nervous and musculoskeletal systems, in terms of sensory input and treatment effectiveness.
B.D2Evaluate interrelationships of cardiovascular and respiratory systems with reference to imbalances.
C.D3Analyse the relationship between equilibrium constant, temperature, enthalpy and entropy for a range of reactions.
D.D4Analyse the operation of a chemical process in terms of the physical chemistry concepts involved.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

ExplainDemonstrateInvestigateDescribeDetermineCarryCalculateAnalysePerformDiscussEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
