BTEC International Level 3 Green Energy

Unit 18: Unit 18 — assessment criteria

BTEC International Level 3 Unit 18 (Unit 18) — 60 Guided Learning Hours.

Internal / Optional60 GLH14 criteria

Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

8 criteria
A.P1Describe how heat pumps operate and transfer heat.
A.P2Examine different types of heat pumps and their applications.
B.P3Describe the principles and components of district heating systems.
B.P4Describe advantages and challenges associated with heat networks.
C.P5Describe installation requirements for low carbon heating systems.
C.P6Describe control methods used to manage low carbon heating systems.
D.P7Describe how low carbon heating systems reduce carbon emissions.
D.P8Describe methods used to assess system performance and carbon savings.

Merit

4 criteria
A.M1Explain how system design and operating conditions affect heat pump performance.
B.M2Explain why district heating systems are suitable for certain building types and locations.
C.M3Explain how installation quality and control strategies affect system efficiency and user comfort.
D.M4Explain how performance data can be used to improve carbon reduction outcomes.

Distinction

2 criteria
AB.D1Analyse how heat pump or heat network design and installation influence system efficiency and carbon reduction.
CD.D2Evaluate the effectiveness of a low carbon heating solution using performance and carbon data in a given application.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeExamineExplainAnalyseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
