Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

11 criteria
A.P1ACHIEVED. The learner has explained the purpose of research in sport, including improving performance, informing policy and supporting evidence-based decision- making. Appropriate sporting examples have been used throughout.
A.P2Explain the function of the muscular system and the different fibre types, identifying the location of the major muscles in the human body.
A.P3Explain the acute and chronic effects of aerobic and anaerobic exercise on the musculoskeletal system.
B.P2ACHIEVED. The learner has described different research methods and designs used in sport, including qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches. Relevant research designs have also been considered.
B.P4Explain the structure and function of the cardiorespiratory system.
B.P5Explain the acute and long term effects of aerobic and anaerobic exercise on the cardiorespiratory system.
C.P3ACHIEVED. The learner has explained the principles of validity, reliability and ethics in sports research, including construct validity, external validity, test-retest reliability, inter- rater reliability and key ethical principles.
C.P6Explain the structure and function of the digestive and energy systems system and the effects of aerobic and anaerobic exercise on each system.
D.P4ACHIEVED. The learner has described quantitative and qualitative techniques used to analyse and present sports research data. Descriptive statistics, coding and thematic analysis have been applied appropriately to the datasets provided.
D.P7Explain the structure and function of the nervous and endocrine systems and the effects.
E.P8Explain the principles of biomechanics in exercise

Merit

5 criteria
A.M1ACHIEVED. The learner has analysed the importance of research in developing sport and exercise practice. The response considers the impact of research on areas including injury prevention, nutrition, performance analysis and participation initiatives.
B.M2ACHIEVED. The learner has compared the strengths and limitations of different research methods and designs using examples from sport. Clear comparisons have been made between quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches.
C.M3ACHIEVED. The learner has analysed the impact of validity, reliability and ethics on the quality and credibility of research findings. Appropriate sporting examples have been used to support the analysis.
D.M4ACHIEVED. The learner has explained how different data analysis techniques are applied within sports research and linked these techniques to different data types and research questions.
E.M5Assess how the principles of biomechanics are

Distinction

3 criteria
AB.D1ACHIEVED. The learner has evaluated how different research methods contribute to evidence-based practice and justified why certain methods and designs are more appropriate for specific research questions and sporting contexts. The learner has produced a presentation that addresses the requirements of the assignment brief. Validity, reliability and ethics are explained clearly and supported through relevant sporting examples. The evidence presented is appropriate for the targeted Distinction grade.
CD.D2ACHIEVED. The learner has evaluated the effectiveness of different methods of presenting research findings and considered their suitability for different sporting audiences. Reasoned judgements have been made throughout the response. The learner has produced a structured report that addresses the requirements of the assignment brief. Quantitative and qualitative data have been analysed appropriately and findings have been presented using suitable methods. The evidence presented is appropriate for the targeted Distinction grade.
E.D3Evaluate how the principles of biomechanics can be used to reduce the risk of injury for participants taking part in.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

AchievedExplainAssessEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Examine the function of the musculoskeletal system and how it responds to
  • B. Examine the function of the cardiorespiratory system and how it responds to in
  • C. Explore the energy and digestive systems and their responses to exercise and physical
  • D. Explore the nervous and endocrine systems and their responses to exercise and physical
  • E. Explore the principles of biomechanics in exercise and physical activity

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
