Learners explore the importance of nutrition and hydration in the context of exercise and physical activity.
Assessment criteria
Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.
Pass
10 criteriaA.P1Describe the sources, functions and daily requirements of macronutrients, micronutrients and fibre from recommended guidelines.
A.P2Describe hydration and its effects on physical activity and exercise performance.
A.P3Describe the structure and function of the digestive system in terms of digestion, absorption and excretion.

D.P4Yes Well done, you have caried out a review of your own performance in basketball and identified strengths and areas for improvement.
Merit
4 criteriaA.M1No This criterion has not been achieved as there are no explanations of the technical skills or tactical demands of basketball provided – to achieve this AC reasons need to be provided for how or why these skills or tactics are required in basketball.
B.M2No The basketball skills demonstrated are not sufficiently effective to meet this AC.
C.M3Produce and assess a detailed, one-week diet and hydration plan for a selected client who takes part in regular exercise or physical activity.
D.M4No You have not explained how strengths and areas of improvement impact your overall performance in basketball. Some of your areas for improvement do explain how improving these would enhance your performance – you will need to complete explanations in this way for your strengths and one of the other areas for improvement to meet the requirements for this assessment criteria.
Distinction
5 criteriaA.D1No This criterion has not been achieved as there is no analysis of the impact of the technical skills and tactical demands on performance in basketball General comments You have produced a clear piece of work that demonstrates a good understanding of the technical skills and tactical demands of basketball. You have described a wide range of relevant technical skills, including dribbling, passing, shooting and defensive techniques, and have also covered key tactical concepts such as attacking and defensive principles, strategies and decision-making. A particular strength of your work is the range of content covered and your use of appropriate basketball terminology throughout. Your descriptions are generally accurate and show a sound understanding of the requirements of the sport. For future work, you should try to carry out research to support references to acknowledge the sources of information and any images used. Including a consistent reference list at the end of your work would strengthen its academic quality and make it clear where your information has been obtained from.
AB.D1Analyse nutritional, energy and hydration needs for a selected client.
BC.D2No This criterion has not been achieved as your basketball skills are not yet confident or fluent. General comments You have successfully demonstrated the basic skills and tactics required for basketball through a range of drill activities and a competitive match. Throughout the assessment, you showed that you could apply fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, catching, shooting and defensive techniques within both practice and game situations. You also demonstrated an understanding of simple tactical principles, including moving into space, supporting teammates, maintaining positional responsibilities and communicating during play.
C.D2Justify the one-week diet and hydration plan for a selected client who takes part in regular exercise or physical activity.
D.D3No You have not analysed your own performance in basketball nor produced a detailed action plan, so have not met the requirements for this criterion. General comments Well done Alek, you have produced a clear review of your basketball performance using evidence from coach feedback, observation records, video footage and performance statistics. You have accurately identified a range of strengths within your performance, including passing, defensive positioning and communication, and have also identified realistic areas for improvement, including shooting accuracy, dribbling under pressure and decision-making. A particular strength of your work is that you have supported your review with evidence from your performance rather than simply stating what you are good at or need to improve. You have also produced an appropriate SMART action plan that focuses on the key areas identified within your review and includes realistic targets and methods for monitoring progress.
Command verbs in this unit
The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.
DescribeCarryProduceYesNoAnalyseJustify
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.
