Assessment criteria

Reproduced verbatim from the Pearson specification — the same grid the assignment brief carries. A unit grade is the highest band where all criteria in that band (and every band below it) are met.

Pass

9 criteria
A.P1Describe the structure and functions of eukaryotic cells.
A.P2Describe the structure of DNA and the function of genes.
A.P3Describe the structure of the nervous system.
B.P4Describe atomic structure.
B.P5Describe features of the periodic table.
B.P6Describe chemical reactions.
C.P7Describe forms and sources of energy.
C.P8Describe examples of the transfer of energy.
C.P9Describe features of waves.

Merit

7 criteria
A.M1Relate the structure of specialist cells to their functions.
A.M2Explain the outcomes of monohybrid genetic crosses.
A.M3Explain the function of the nervous and endocrine systems.
B.M4Explain the organisation of elements in the periodic table.
B.M5Correctly use balanced equations to explain the outcomes of chemical reactions.
C.M6Calculate the efficiency of energy transformations.
C.M7Explain the benefits and disadvantages of using electromagnetic radiation.

Distinction

3 criteria
A.D1Use examples to analyse the way in which the body maintains a constant internal environment.
B.D2Evaluate applications of neutralisation reactions.
C.D3Explain how energy losses due to energy transformations in the home or workplace can be minimised.

Command verbs in this unit

The verb decides the depth expected — that is what separates Pass from Merit and Distinction work on the same learning aim.

DescribeRelateExplainCorrectlyCalculateUseEvaluate
Pearson's ladder runs Identify → Describe → Explain → Compare / Analyse → Evaluate / Justify / Assess. A Merit or Distinction criterion on the same aim always implies the Pass beneath it: an “evaluate” answer that never first “explains” fails, however polished it reads. Hover a verb for what it demands.

Learning aims

  • A. Understand eukaryotic cells, inheritance and the control of homeostasis
  • B. Understand atomic structure, the periodic table and chemical reactions
  • C. Understand energy and electromagnetic waves

How checkb.tech checks this unit

Upload a learner's submission and checkb.tech reads it against exactly these criteria, reporting each one as met, partly met, or not met — with the evidence that informed the verdict cited, so every call is auditable.

The check runs against the official Pearson documents for this unit, and identical evidence always produces an identical result — the same script gets the same verdict every time.

It never awards a grade. You stay the assessor: confirm, dismiss, or act on every criterion before your assessment decision is final.
